Greatest Hits: The Utility of Free Speech

Share

The Utility of Free Speech:  While the left only allows speech that completely agrees with their own opinions, actual free speech has great value…

As we all know, freedom of speech is under attack.  Mark Lloyd proposes to replace privately owned media with a government approved and moderated PBS.  Cass Sustein and Henry Waxman have both floated the idea of regulating Internet content.  Speech codes on campus restrict the free flows of ideas on college campuses.  The ACLU threatens to sue kids that pray at graduation ceremonies.  People are threatened if they pray in public.  Conversely, the left is able to engage in whatever outrageous activity they choose, and even do what they accuse the right of doing.  The double standard is sometimes astounding.

Following Marxist concepts like "tolerant repression," the left seeks to limit or eliminate dissent. We understand that this is part of their effort to obtain power by silencing all opposition, or making said opposition ineffective, and unable to reach the people.  Their allies in the media do not cover stories critical of the left, or distorts them into a one sided attack on the opposition.  The government ignores mass protests and accuses the protesters of "racism, terrorism," and being paid by special interests.  What they cannot ban, or cover up, they will discredit.  They attempt to cloud genuine dissent with hate, all in order to attack the messenger, and to ignore the message.

Our Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, this is certain.  And we know that in a Constitutional Republic, free speech is vital for debate and the free flow of ideas.  Without free speech, the Republic that so many bled and died for would take a short trip into tyranny. All these are true, but I would submit that there is an additional benefit for freedom of speech.

Every nation has fringe groups; racists, religious extremists of every type, anarchists, communist revolutionaries, national socialists, and probably a huge number of others.  It is tempting to deny these people a public forum, as they are repugnant to most all Democrats, Independents, and Republicans. But there are benefits to allowing them speak and function in the open:

  1. If they are public, we know who they are.  Putting a face to the hate allows us to confront it.
  2. If they speak openly, we can know what they believe, and what they want.  Knowing this allows us all to confront them.
  3. If they operate openly, we know what they are doing.  We can keep track of them, and monitor their activities.

If we ban free speech, even the speech that we find disgusting, we lose some things:

  1. We will have no idea who the extremists are, as they won't go away, they'll go underground.
  2. We will have no idea what they believe or plan to do.
  3. By banning their speech, the government will prove most of their beliefs about their ideas being a threat to power.
  4. Being banned makes them more attractive to "recruits." They will have the "truth those in power don't want you to know."
  5. They become dangerous and more likely to take violent action.

Freedom of speech means that you might be offended by something that is said or written.  We have to take hate for what it is, and confront it, or just let if fail under the weight of it's own stupidity.  We have to allow all of it, or face tyranny.  No party or group should have the ability to eliminate freedom of speech, or our Republic is doomed.

“Burn the American Flags” Event

A group called Disarm NYPD plans to celebrate the 4th of July with an July 1 event featuring the burning of American flags.

It started as an event to burn the Confederate Flag. But other groups around the country turned such events into burning both the Confederate and American flags, so the Disarm NYPD group changed the name of the event, as announced on a Facebook Event page:

We changed the name of this event to “Burn the American Flag.” We did this for several reasons, all of which are hopefully obvious, and should ring true to everyone with a conscious. The Confederate flag has long been a symbol of white supremacy, slavery, and Jim Crow. However, the Confederacy lost the war the American flag has unceasingly, from the first day it was ever hung, represented the exact same thing.

https://www.facebook.com/DisarmNYPD/photos/a.360147267502281.1073741828.292585474258461/401347036715637/?type=1&theater

As the event got attention, outrage mounted:

Disarm NYPD added this statement on Facebook:

Last week, we created an event called “Burn the American Flags”, which has invoked quite a reaction from people, both positive and negative. What we had intended to be a decidedly small, unspectacular gathering of burning symbols of oppression has been shared thousands of times and has been picked up by the press. We feel that we should take this opportunity to further clarify our position on the subject.

We maintain, unwaveringly, that both the Confederate flag, and the American flag are symbols of oppression….

Despite this, many people are rather offended by our decision to burn the American flag. We find it a sign of the times that people can care so much about a piece of cloth, while at the same time be so quiet about black churches being burned all over the country. Perhaps this is the great difference between us and the so-called “patriots”. While they express their loyalty to symbols, we express our loyalty to the lives of the oppressed.

We do not believe the ideals of America are anything to be revered…. So, we will burn the American flag, a symbol of oppression and genocide, and in the same action, dismantle our stunted, cynical expectations of what is possible in the world. The current trajectory of history is unsustainable. It is completely unrealistic to desire things stay as they are, and more unrealistic, even abominable, to desire to “go back to our roots”. We, the dreamers, are the true realists. We know things can’t continue this way, so we commit to building a better world. A world better than America.

Rush Limbaugh may have been the first person to predict this turn:

And I’ll make another prediction to you. The next flag that will come under assault, and it will not be long, is the American flag. Do not look at me that way. It makes perfect sense. If you take a look at the timeline of progressive events, their speed and rapidity with which the left is conducting this assault on all of these American traditions and institutions, if you don’t think the American flag’s in their crosshairs down the road, you had better stop and reconsider.

The American flag is what? It’s the symbol of America. The left what? Doesn’t like this country very much and never has and it’s getting angrier and angrier about it seemingly every day. The American flag stands for the United States of America and, as such, everything that’s wrong with it. And you wait. It isn’t gonna be long before the American flag is gonna cause chills, fear, scary thoughts, it’s gonna make me nervous, the American flag, when I see the American flag, it’s a symbol of hate.

You wait, folks. You wait.

Flag burning is constitutionally protected speech, according to the U.S. Supreme Court.

So no one can stop them. All we can do is learn about what motivates some protesters.

“Israelis live in the real world, not the world of Obama’s delusional hope”

As part of my effort to reach new audiences, I have a post at IJ Review regarding my recent trip to Israel, I Spent Two Weeks Talking With Israelis. Here's What They Had To Say About President Obama and Iran:

While anecdotal, our interactions were consistent with polling showing that Israelis don't trust Obama on Iran and that Obama has low favorability. That polling has grown worse for Obama in recent weeks.

Indeed, Americans have very low confidence that any Iran deal will prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

In other words, Israelis live in the real world, not the world of Obama's delusional hope. And they don't appreciate Obama taking risks with their lives.

You want more? You know the drill.

Go over to the link, and share it on Facebook and Twitter.

Here are the links to my Israel posts:

Fake Hate Alert [Darleen Click]

Well, shut my mouth.

A man who reported someone beat him and carved a homophobic slur into his arm staged the attacks, authorities in rural Utah said Tuesday.

Millard County Sheriff Robert Dekker said Rick Jones, 21, could face charges after officers investigating the series of reported attacks found inconsistencies in the evidence. The Delta man eventually acknowledged faking the harassment, Dekker said.

Brett Tolman, an attorney for Jones, said the reports were a cry for help initially directed toward people close to him, and Jones didn’t realize how much attention they would get.

“I think it’s such good evidence of the difficulties members of the gay community deal with, and some make better choices than others,” Tolman said.

Yes, he goes out of his way with a series of acts made to look like he is a victim of “homophobia”, and when revealed as the perp, he is still the victim cuz Fake-But-Accurate(tm).

Hey Kids! Do You Want To Get Shot While Talking On The Phone?

The Ocean County (New Jersey) Prosecutor’s Office would like you to refrain from buying a cell phone case that might just get you killed.

Please folks – this cell phone case is not a cool product or a good idea. A police officers job is hard enough, without having to make a split second decision in the dark of night when someone decides without thinking to pull this out while stopped for a motor vehicle violation.

There are apparently a fair number of sites offering phone covers with grips that mimic the look of a revolver or an pistol with a reasonable degree of accuracy. These covers are “good enough” mimics to convince other people that you have a gun to your head when you’re talking on the phone, or that you have a gun in your pocket when you’re walking around.

One site selling a more expensive version of the cover that comes with an app that enables you to play Russian roulette, and “fires” at random when the trigger is pulled.

It appears that the original target market for most variations of this idiotic cover are Asian markets where real firearms are incredibly rare in the hands of citizens.

Be smart, and leave this novelty item off your online shopping cart.

Ted Cruz auditions for The Simpsons

Presidential hopeful Sen. Cruz is a long-time fan of The Simpsons.

In April, Sen. Crew joined the crew at The Federalist to chat about his favorite episodes show off a few of his best impressions. “Cruz talked about how much he loved "Round Springfield", the episode where Jazz musician Bleeding Gums Murphy passed away, imitating the voices of James Earl Jones as Mustafa, Darth Vader, and Jones himself,” wrote The Federalist.

Today, BuzzFeed News released video proof of Cruz’s love for the animated TV show. “Hi, I’m Ted. With Harry Shearer retiring, I’m auditioning for any part I can get in The Simpsons.”

Having been part of the show since it debuted in 1989, Shearer announced his retirement from the show in May. The New York Times reported:

It is not looking like an okely-dokely day in the town of Springfield: Harry Shearer, an Emmy Award-winning cast member of "The Simpsons," who provides the voices of characters like the irritatingly upbeat neighbor Ned Flanders, the billionaire tyrant Mr. Burns and his faithful manservant, Smithers, has indicated that he is parting ways with this long-running Fox animated series."

Enter BuzzFeed News and Sen. Cruz:

“I have been told many times I have a face for radio and I have a face for animation,” concludes Cruz.

I’ve seen Cruz do his Simpson impressions on more than one occasion and they never cease to be chuckle-worthy. We hear the same stump speeches from candidates time and time again, the same talking points, the same policy chats, it’s refreshing to get a glimpse of them as people every once in a while.
